Applying for a Marriage Licence

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! Marriage Licences are issued by appointment only through the Clerk's Department.

Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and require three business days notice for documents to be reviewed.

Your marriage licence is valid for 90 days (3 months) from the day it is issued.

Please note that at this time, the Township does not perform civil marriages.

To apply for a marriage licence:

  • Visit Service Ontario's Online Marriage License Application Portal and submit an application.
  • Once the completed application is submitted, please contact the Clerk’s Department to schedule an appointment to pick up your marriage license and pay the required fee.

Required Identification

You will need to bring with you 2 original pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married. One piece of identification must include a photo.

Examples include:

  • Birth Certificate

  • Valid Passport

  • Records of Immigrant Landing

  • Canadian Citizenship Card

  • Valid Driver's Licence

  • Valid Ontario Photo Card

  • Canadian Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)

Ontario Health Cards and Social Insurance Number (SIN) cards are not acceptable forms of identification. For a full list of acceptable ID visit the Government of Ontario Website.

Cost

A marriage licence costs $100.00 and is payable by cash or debit.

Other Information

Important information if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are applying for a licence as a minor
  • You divorced from another marriage in Canada
  • You divorced from another marriage in a different country
  • You are a widow

Both applicants need to be 16 years of age or older on the date that the marriage licence is issued.

If one or both of you are under 18 years of age, they need to complete a Consent of Parents or Guardians to Marriage form which can be found on the Province of Ontario’s website, or picked up at the Municipal Office. You will also need to do one of the following:

  • Have all parents or legal guardians swear or affirm the form before a commissioner for taking affidavits, and bring the completed and sworn or affirmed form with you when you pick up the licence.
  • Bring all your parents or legal guardians with you when picking up your licence to have the form sworn or affirmed in person.

Applicants must provide an original or court-certified copy of the Final Decree, Final Judgment, or a Certificate of Divorce. Certified copies can be obtained from the court that granted the divorce.

Note: A divorce order issued by a judge is not the same as a certificate of divorce which acts as the proof of a divorce.

Applicants who have been divorced outside of Canada must provide documentation to the Province of Ontario to obtain a Foreign Divorce Authorization prior to being issued an Ontario marriage licence.

Applicants must provide an original Death Certificate of spouse, Funeral Director's Statement of Death, or Court order declaring that your spouse has died.

Marriage Certificate

After the ceremony, the person who performed your wedding provides you with a record of solemnization as a keepsake. This is not a marriage certificate.

Your marriage needs to be registered before you can get a marriage certificate. You or the officiant who performed the marriage needs to send your completed and signed marriage licence to Service Ontario so the marriage can be registered.

You can order a marriage certificate at any time following your marriage ceremony; however your application may take up to 8 weeks after your marriage is registered to be processed.

Couples can complete a Marriage Certificate Application and mail it directly to the Registrar General's office or request the Marriage Certificate online at Service Ontario.
