The Township of Perth South was incorporated in 1998 following the amalgamation of the Township of Downie and Township of Blanshard. In terms of notable residents, the ninth Prime Minister of Canada, Arthur Meighen was born in Anderson, a small community in Perth South. Additionally, Timothy Eaton and his brother James opened their first store less than half of a kilometer away from Kirkton.
