Reports to: Head Lifeguard

Wage: $17.00 per hour

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Lifeguard is to assist with the effective and safe delivery of swim programs and pool services at the Kirkton-Woodham Swimming Pool. The Assistant Lifeguard shall work under the supervision of the Lifeguard or his/her designate. The Assistant Lifeguard shall maintain a positive attitude and work cooperatively with all other staff, customers, and stakeholders for the successful delivery of Department programs and recreation facilities, for the betterment of the community.

Duties and responsibilities:

Pool-side (50%):

• Assist with supervision and instruction of Pool patrons.
• Assist with instruction and delivery of aquatic programs according to Lifesaving Society standards. Assist with delivery of public swimming programs and other special aquatic events in a safe and attentive manner.
• Required to report unusual occurrences to on-duty supervisor.
• Communication is key, must be able to communicate with patrons, parents and other staff in a professional and respectful way, explaining policies and procedures.
• Must participate in pre-season training as well as a minimum of two in-service staff training sessions. 
• Responsible for knowing, following and enforcing all facility policies and procedures. Staff are encouraged to bring ideas forward that can improve the overall operation of the Aquatic Facility.
• Perform duties as asked by the Lifeguard and share in the day-to-day tasks with all team members.
• Shadow lifeguards and assist with swim instruction programs
• Will be required to work evenings and weekends
• Ability to work as a member of a team.
• Perform such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Maintenance (10%)

• Required to maintain the pool in a safe and clean manner, making sure all debris is clear from the pool, deck, walkways, changing rooms and restrooms.

Administrative (40%)

• Assist with the department’s high standard of customer service by providing excellent service, quality and value.
• Ensure the safe day-to-day operation of the Pool including general housekeeping and custodial duties, and administrative duties when necessary.
• Assist cashier with admission policy standards (explaining policy, helping band patrons, explaining rules to groups) when necessary and available without detracting from primary duties as an Assistant Lifeguard.
• Perform duties of Cashier as required, including collection of money for services, balancing and submissions of collected monies from services provided, registering swim lessons and set-up and clean-up of cashier area.
• Recordkeeping for pool testing and pool attendance

• Cashier runs and operates smoothly, balance sheet accurate
• Admission records are up-to-date and filed correctly
• Facility Environment is safe and free of debris
• Swim Instruction Program runs smoothly and effectively
• Evidence of accurate and consistent record keeping

Qualifications:

• Must possess the following aquatic qualifications (by season’s opening):
  • Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross certification.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification.
  • Must be physically able to perform the requirements of the position – this is tested both at the beginning of the season during training as well as during the season in-service training.
• This includes, water-fitness, rotations, scanning strategies
• Experience in delivery of aquatic programs and services considered an asset.
• Exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Problem Solving skills, finding innovative ways to fix issues
• Energetic, positive attitude and ability to work independently.
• Ability to work day, evening, weekend, and on-call shifts.
• A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check required prior to starting employment (if over the age of 18)
• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

Position: Lifeguard & Swim Instructor (Seasonal)

Department: Recreation Programs

Reports to: Head Lifeguard

Wage: $19.21 - $22.60 per hour

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor is to assist with the effective and safe delivery of swim programs and pool services at the Kirkton-Woodham Swimming Pool. The Lifeguard/Instructor shall work under the supervision of the Head Lifeguard or his/her designate. The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor shall maintain a positive attitude and work cooperatively with all other staff, customers, and stakeholders for the successful delivery of Department programs and recreation facilities, for the overall betterment of the community.

Pool-Side (50%):

• Instruction and delivery of aquatic programs according to Lifesaving Society and Red Cross standards. Delivery of public swimming programs and other special aquatic events in a safe and attentive manner.
• Communication is key, must be able to communicate with patrons, parents and other staff in a professional and respectful way, explaining policies and procedures
• Be able to deal with behavioral issues and high-stress situations
• Must participate in pre-season training as well as a minimum of two in-service staff training sessions.
• Be prepared for emergency situations, such as major/minor rescues, first aid, and CPR 
• Perform duties as directed by the on-duty Head Lifeguard and share in the day-to-day tasks with all team members, be prepared for on-call emergency situations.
• Will be required to work outside and beyond the normal hours of work, including evenings and weekends
• Ability to work as a member of a team.
• Perform such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.
• Must be able to asses and stay calm during high stress situations.

Maintenance (15%):

• Required to report unusual occurrences to on-duty supervisor.
• Required to maintain the pool in a safe and clean manner.
• Understand the procedures involving pool fouling and cleanliness to maintain a safe environment.

Administrative (35%):

• Assist with the department’s high standard of customer service by providing excellent service, quality and value.
• Ensure the safe day-to-day operation of the Pool including general housekeeping and custodial duties, and administrative duties when necessary.
• Perform proper record keeping and maintaining applicable records such as lesson attendance/report cards, incident reports, pool testing and fouling reports, etc. in accordance with Ontario 565 regulations or updated regulations if applicable.
• Use daily records to reveal patterns and insights into day-to-day operations, can design and implement preventative measures
• Assist cashier with admission policy standards (explaining policy, helping band patrons, explaining rules to camps) when necessary and available without detracting from primary duties as a lifeguard/instructor.
• Responsible for knowing, following and enforcing all Pool policies and procedures. Staff are encouraged to bring ideas forward that can improve the overall operation of the Pool.

• Pool Environment remains safe, controlled and positive
• Patrons and bathers follow rules and policies
• Able to identify any issues, may that be past, on-going, or potential 
• Compliant and complete record keeping

Qualifications:

• Must possess the following aquatic qualifications (by season's opening):
  • Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard – Pool Certification.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C Certification.
  • Lifesaving Society’s Lifesaving Instructor,
  • First Aid Instructor, Bronze Examiner Certifications considered an asset.
  • Must be physically able to perform the requirements of the position – this is tested both at the beginning of the season during training as well as during the season in-service training. (This includes, water-fitness, National Lifeguard techniques, rotations, scanning strategies)
• Experience in delivery of aquatic programs and services considered an asset.
• Exceptional customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Energetic, positive attitude and ability to work independently.
• Problem Solving Skills, finding innovative ideas to fix issues
• Reliable transportation to scheduled shifts
• Ability to work day, evening, weekend and on-call shifts.

Position: Head Lifeguard (Seasonal)

Department: Recreation Programs

Reports to: Recreation Manager

Wage: $22.00 - $25.74 per hour

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Head Lifeguard is to lead the aquatic staff and the effective delivery of programs and services in a safe, regulated manner at the Kirkton-Woodham Swimming Pool. The Aquatic Staff shall report to the Head Lifeguard, while the Head Lifeguard shall work under the supervision of the Treasurer, or their designate. The Head Lifeguard shall work in a cooperative and positive manner with all other staff, customers, and stakeholders for the successful delivery of Pool programs and recreation facilities. The Head Lifeguard is the on-duty supervisor whenever working at the Swimming Pool and is responsible for day-to-day operations at the facility. The Head Lifeguard is expected to take the leadership role concerning most attributes of the pool and to understand and maintain the overall goals of the Pool team members and patrons.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Pool Side (30%):

• Responsible for the safe day-to-day operation of the Aquatic Facility including the supervision of approximately 7 lifeguards/instructors and patrons of all ages. 
• Monitor and, when required, coach aquatic staff toward a high level of job performance
• Responsible for enforcing all departmental policies and procedures while encouraging staff to bring ideas forward that can improve the overall operation of the Department. 
• Respond to any incidents, issues or potential threats to the safety of the pool environment
• Ensure all Lifesaving & First Aid Equipment is properly stocked, in good working condition, and in a prominent location for emergency use

• Effectively demonstrates knowledge, understanding of Ontario Regulation 565 and ensure compliance 
• Perform such other related duties as assigned.
• Communication is key, must be able to communicate with patrons, parents and other staff in a professional and respectful way, explaining policies and procedures

Maintenance (20%):

• Responsible for ensuring water quality compliance is maintained in the pool and assist with maintenance of the facility along with other department staff. Ensure the general upkeep and cleanliness of the pool. Assist with maintaining inventory and purchasing of janitorial, office, program and first aid supplies, chemicals, etc.
• Work cooperatively with the health and safety representative for the Kirkton-Woodham Aquatic Facility and all aquatic program staff. Complete monthly site inspections.

Administrative (50%):

• Responsible for ensuring the Municipality’s high standard of customer service is achieved by providing excellent service, quality, and value. Responsible for ensuring and providing exceptional customer services in all duties and functions.
• Responsible for accurate & complete record keeping including applicable records such as program lessons/report cards, filtration operation, chlorine system, etc. in accordance with Ontario Regulation 565, municipal policies, or updated regulatory practices as applicable.
• Responsible for being an effective liaison with all stakeholders including regulatory agencies, public health officials, customers, recreation/camp program coordinators and other important contacts.
• Responsible for the delivery of aquatic programs in accordance with applicable governing standards including Red Cross and Lifesaving Society of Canada. Assist with the promotion of program registration 
• Responsible for personnel functions including scheduling, training, and evaluating performance of staff. Responsible for conducting staff meetings and training programs to ensure adherence with current policies, procedures, and health regulations.
• Assist with handling cash and other forms of payments from customers. Responsible for ensuring proper cash handling procedures are followed at the Pool, and ensuring that cash is kept secure at all times, completing cash deposits in a timely manner.
• Complete departmental incident reports such as accident, vandalism, and customer complaint reports.

Qualifications:

• Must possess the following aquatic qualifications:
  • Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard – Pool Certification.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C Certification.
  • Lifesaving Society’s Lifesaving Instructor,
  • First Aid Instructor, Bronze Examiner Certifications considered an asset.
  • Must be physically able to perform the requirements of the position – this is tested both at the beginning of the season during training as well as during the season in-service training. (This includes, water-fitness, National Lifeguard techniques, rotations, scanning strategies)
• Minimum 2-3 years of aquatic and supervisory experience. Must be a proven team player and leader.
• Experience in direct delivery of aquatic programs and services.
• Exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Energetic, positive attitude and ability to work independently.
• Leadership and Problem-Solving Skills, finding innovative ways to fix issues
• Microsoft Excel and Teams skills an asset.
• Ability to work day, evening, weekend and on-call shifts.
• A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check required prior to starting employment (If successful applicant is 18 or older).
• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
